JMF Digital Marketing How do I Find the Best Keywords for My Business?

Selecting the right keywords for your businesses is one of the most important task of your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy. However, many business owners are often unsure on what keywords to select. Do not worry this blog will help explain how to find the best keywords for your businesses so you are able to implement a success SEO strategy.

Most business owners that I have worked with, often want to select keywords they would use to search for their business. However, this is not a practical approach because you are not a customer. You as a business owner are an expert in the field in which you are business in. A customer is an individual that is seeking goods and/or services that they are interested in. The key difference is a customer may not be fulling familiar with your industry. Therefore, the way they search for you will be different than yours.

Often, many business owners struggle to get results from their selected keywords. It all comes down to them not selecting the right keywords for three reasons. First, the keyword is highly competitive to rank for. Second, the keyword has an exceptionally low search volume. Lastly, the keyword is not relevant to your webpage or your company. However, selecting the right keywords is doable for any industry all it takes is some strategy.

Steps to Picking the Right Keywords

  1. Brainstorm with your team.
  2. Keyword research

      1. Paid keyword research tools
      2. Free keyword research tools
  3. Evaluate and optimize

Brainstorm With Your Team

The reason why I say brainstorm with your team is because multiple brains are better than one. For keyword research to be optimize we need different perspectives available to us so we may consider different search intents and words being used.

Create a list with your team on keywords that you think would be a great fit for your business. This list will be used as a reference in your keyword research to give you more ideas once you start researching. You may find that you will only use some keywords for your SEO on this list.

It is important to note that the shorter the keyword term, usually results in more competition and higher volume. Longer keyword terms are the opposite, which will result in less competition and higher volume.

Keyword Research

After compiling a list of potential keywords with your team, you are now able to begin researching. When researching a keyword, you want to focus on these 3 components keyword difficulty, search volume, and whether its relevant to your business or webpage.

Keyword difficulty

Keyword Difficulty is an indicator on how competitive a given keyword would be to rank for. Trying to rank for an extremely competitive keyword will be very time consuming and costly, the results will be poor. It is recommended to go for more less competitive words that you will be able to rank for far less effort, in which you would get good results from. Unfortunately, the most popular words of every industry are pretty much competitive. Therefore, you must get creative in tweaking keywords to find a word that is much less competitive. For example, if the word “contractor” is too competitive then targe the word “commercial general contractor. As stated earlier, longer keyword phrases tend to be less competitive. When you think of keyword difficulty, think of supply. Why? Because there are too suppliers for that keyword. However, it is also important to consider a keyword’s search volume.

Search Volume

Search Volume is an indicator is especially important because it tells you the estimated number of searches for a given keyword for a given time. Typically, its given by monthly searches. Search volume will tell you if there is a market for a given keyword. When you think of search volume, think of demand. Many business owners get this part confused because they search for their keywords and Google/Bing will give them a bunch of search results. They believe since a keyword brings search results, then it has volume to it. This is a myth and is not true. Google will provide you search results for basically anything you type in; it does not mean that the keywords you typed in have a high search volume. Keyword difficulty and search volume are important if its relevant to your business!

Relevancy is what will make or break any keyword you choose to target for your business or webpage. For example, have you ever typed something on Google/Bing and clicked on a link that brought you to a page that had nothing to do with what you searched for? If so, then the webpage is not relevant to a user’s search intent. Plus, you also need to consider if the keyword is relevant to your business or webpage. To find out, type in the keyword or phrase into a search query and see what pops up. If the pages that pop up are not relevant to your business, then I would suggest you pick a different keyword. When you think of relevancy, think of being in the same market.

Summary of Keyword Research

It is important to consider keywords carefully because you need to be very strategic. You will be competing against companies that have more resources to compete with SEO than you do. To maximize your success for SEO you need to pick the best keywords. Consider the competition (supply) and the volume (demand) for a keyword. It is also recommended you check if you are relevant (in the same market) for the keyword as well. Find keywords that are not so competitive with volume, and is relevant to your business or webpage.

You are probably wondering how you get all this information; well, the answer is simple with keyword research tools.

Keyword Research Tools

There are many different types of keywords research tools out there that will give you an idea on how competitive a keyword is and its volume. However, it is important to mention that results from different keyword research tools may vary from one another. So, it is important for you to use your best judgement when utilizing these tools.

The purpose of keyword tools is to give a better understanding of keywords so you can develop better results for your SEO efforts. Most keyword tools will break the keyword difficulty from 1 to 99, with 99 being the hardest difficulty. Search volume is broken by a range of numbers. For example, for the keyword “digital marketing” can vary from 1000 to 10000 searches a month.  It will populate the data based off whatever word or phrase you place into their keyword query.

Other useful things about keyword research tools as they can provide you with other relevant keywords, blog ideas and more. All this information is used to spark your SEO success.
